Term Four Inquiries 2011

What are T.N.I.S. students inquiring about this term?
This term the Year 8 teams are inquiring into 'Economic activities influence the decisions that people make'. Manuka and Kowhai team are focusing on the ethics of the marketplace, how we are influenced by marketing and advertising and the personal responsibility of decisions we make. As part of the theme of 'How we organise ourselves' Rachel Leyland, Media Manager from DraftFCB presented the seven principles of persuasion to students in Manuka team. This will provoke the students to think about their own advertising campaign.

Term Two Inquiries 2011

Kowhai and Manuka Teams have been expressing themselves this term. The central idea was 'People use different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness'. Kowhai Team visited Auckland Art Gallery where they created a unique piece of art to express themselves, using symbols. Through discussions, the Gallery Educators motivated students to describe and analyse paintings in the gallery. The Art Gallery staff were extremely complimentary about the students' enthusiasm for art and their abilities to think and to articulate their ideas.

ConneXions Magazine April 2011

A selection of students' work from each class has been compiled into a magazine called 'Connexions'. There are examples of written and visual English relating to our first two Units of Inquiry this year. A copy of this magazine is in every classroom and can be purchased from school.

Term One Inquiries 2011

5th March 2011

All Year 7 and Year 8 teams have started the year with the transdisciplinary theme 'Who We Are'. This theme encourages inquiry into the nature of the self, beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities and what it means to be human.
The Year 7 students have explored the theme 'Who We Are' by focusing on a central idea of 'Working together we can build relationships to develop a sense of identity'. The students have used the key concepts of connection and responsibility to determine how they can build relationships and develop their own identity especially in their first term at T.N.I.S..

The Year 8 students have considered how 'personal and cultural well-being can depend on a balance of interconnected factors'. This particular central idea has prepared the students for the Waiheke Cycle Tour, especially through the concepts of change and responsibility. The Year 8 students have been challenged through this authentic learning experience to improve and change their physical fitness and demonstrate their responsibility to the class whilst on the island.

What Are T.N.I.S. Students Inquiring About?

21st September 2010

T.N.I.S. students have started their next transdisciplinary theme which will roll over into Term Four.

Kowhai Team (Year 7) have just started 'Where we are in place and time'. The teachers and students will be visiting Howick Village. This will be an excellent and relevant experience for the students who are inquiring into 'Past and present civilisations are linked in many ways'.

Manuka Team (Year 7) are currently working on 'How We Organise Ourselves'. The Central Idea is 'People can organise the way they live together through a range of systems.' The students will consider how different systems have changed and are connected.

Term Three Inquiries

16th August 2010

Year 8 teams, Rata and Rimu, are currently exploring 'Where We Are in Place and Time'. The central idea is 'exploration leads to discovery and develops new understandings'. The concepts that are driving the children's inquiries in these teams are form, reflection and causation. Through this inquiry we expect children to demonstrate the following learner profiles; risk takers, knowledgeable, thinkers and inquirers.

Totara Team which is Year students, are currently working on 'How We Express Ourselves'. The central idea is 'through the arts people use different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness as human beings'. The students will consider different perspectives and through reflection they will will interpret different art forms. Students will express ideas and feelings creatively through different art forms.

Year 7 teams, Kowhai and Manuka are inquiring into how 'people can establish practices in order to sustain and maintain the Earth's resources'. This is the central idea for 'Sharing the Planet. Students will think about their own personal responsibility and the responsibilities of others throughout this unit.

In Term Two Totara Team inquired into 'Sharing the Planet'. The central idea was 'Finding peaceful solutions to conflict can lead to a better quality of human life'. The students researched the causes of conflict and the different perspectives held by individuals and groups of people.

This term Rimu and Manuka Teams have focused on the 'Who We Are' theme. The central idea for Rimu Team was 'Personal and cultural well-being can be dependent on a complex balance of interconnected factors'. The central idea for Manuka Tteam was 'All people are cultural beings who can change and adapt'.
